The Cervical Total Disc Replacement is the latest technology in spinal procedures. Similar to the procedure currently performed, the total disc replacement involves an interior approach to the neck where a disc is removed. Instead of fusion bone placement, an artificial disc will be placed and designed to closely mimic the natural range of human motion. There is no approval in the United States at this time for any cervical artificial disc, although approval on early models is expected quite soon. The Blackstone Advent™ Artificial Cervical Disc, which is co-developed by Dr. Nelson, will be implanted for the first time in May 2007 in Brazil.
